God Jul

Holiday preparations and daily demands have kept me from blogging in the past month and those demands continue so I don't expect to resume until the new year.  In the meantime I thought I would provide some links to websites with information about Norwegian holiday traditions.  Our Norwegian ancestors most likely celebrated many a "white Christmas" living first in a mountain valley in Norway and later in Wisconsin, Iowa, and the Dakotas.  Although the geography of the mid-western American states is vastly different than that of the Hallingdal region of Norway, cold winters were common to both locations, so our Norwegian ancestors would have found the wintry holiday season familar.

In the late afternoon of Christmas Eve, the Knudson's may have been able to hear the church bells peel to announce the holdiay.  Most likely, they gathered with family to celebrate.  Kari would have prepared traditional porridge for her family.  Knud, Sever, Kristina, Barbra, et al, would have hoped to receive the lucky serving of porridge containing an almond.   Lutefisk, pork, cabbage, Julekake and at least seven kinds of cookies were also likely to have been a part of the Christmas menu.  And Sevat and the other adults may have enjoyed some Juleol on the special occasion.  Perhaps Kari and Sevat told their children stories of the Nisse who protected Stake gard in Gol where some of their family still lived.  Whether the children left  something for the Jul Nisse or, like their non-Norwegian neighbors, anxiously waited for Santa Claus to fill their stockings, they would have been excited by the magic of the season.  But a larger part of their celebration would have included reading Bible passages (in Norwegian) and attending church services at the local Lutheran church.  And, in Gol, the family who remained may have been reading the same passages and singing the same hymns and wishing God Jul to each other and to their loved ones across the Atlantic in America.

On behalf of Sevat, Kari and all our ancestors I wish you God Jul!  And, if you want to play it safe, leave something for the Jul Nisse next to the cookies you leave for Santa this week.

Additional Farm Names

Today's mail brought a book (Norwegian Immigrants to the United States, A biographical directory, 1825-1850, volume 3) I recently ordered.  I hoped it would shed additional light on the Knudsens who immigrated to Wisconsin in the late 1840's.  I was not disappointed although only two of Knud Endresen's sons are listed.  It corroborates information I've already collected as well as providing new information to be confirmed.  The new information provides the sailing information for Asle Knudsen, Sevat's in-laws' names, and their farm name.

Asle departed from Drammen, Norway on the Albertine and arrived in New York on 12 July 1848.  His last home in Norway is listed as Stake, Gol, Buskerud, so he had remained on the family farm after Sevat and Kari married and moved away.

Kari's parents are Syver Knudsen and Barbra Evensdatter. Kari's and her father's homes are listed as Hersgaard, a farm about 1000 meters northwest of Hesla farm.

One of the sources referenced for Sevat & Kari's information is the Luther Valley Lutheran Church records (presumably for Beloit, Wisconsin).

Number 292

A small piece of the puzzle of Knud Endresen's imprisonment has fallen into place.  Knud's prisoner number at Akerrshus festning slaveri was 292.  My original thought when I saw 292 following his name on the death and burial record was that it represented his prisoner number.  However, as I considered the information following his name might refer to his burial in consecrated ground, I also considered the number could refer to his burial plot.  The confirmation that 292 was his prisoner number is found in communicant records for the prison.  The 1842 and 1844 communicant records for Akershus festning slaveri list Knud Endresen of Stake, prisoner number 292, as one of those receiving communion on 27 February 1842, 16 October 1842, and on 21 April 1844.

These records also indicate that prisoner numbers were reused.  Lars Engebredsen was listed as prisoner 292 in the communicant record for 21 May 1841.  The next entry for prisoner 292 is for Knud Endresen of Stake on 27 February 1842.  Following Knud's death in September 1844, there is no record for a prisoner 292 in the communicant records.

So it appears that Knud was imprisoned at Akershus between June 1841 and February 1842.  Unless Knud was transferred to Akershus from another prison, he likely commited his crime sometime in 1841.

Interconnected

I haven't yet been able to decipher Knud Endresen's death record.  My language instructor took a look at the record and suggested one of the words I've been trying to work out might be "selig" (holy, consecrated).  I agree it looks like it could be selig, but until she suggested it referred to his religious state, I hadn't thought the word made sense in the context of the record.  However, if it is referring to where in the cemetery Knud was buried, consecrated could fit.  The number that follows "selig" may indicate a burial plot rather than a prisoner number.  So, I've been looking for information about the cemetery and burial practices of the slaveri.  I've also continued to try to determine his cause of death.  I found some useful websites (see links) with cause of death terminology in several languages.  However, I still have not found a match for Knud's cause of death.  I'm leaning toward pneumonia since the word begins with "bryst" or breast/chest.  The second half of the word may be "losing" (loosening?) which doesn't quite make sense, but may if there are other translations that I haven't yet uncovered.  Eventually, I'm sure I'll be able to find the key to unlock this mystery.

As a break from poring over death records, I spent a little time searching for and filling in allied family on the Starkey family tree.  As I filled in a few more families, I noticed something that caught my interest.  My g-grandparents, Sever and Justine Starkey have a number of family members who are intermarried.  Justine's maiden name was Peterson -- the daughterr of Hans and Karoline Peterson.  I had noticed previously that Justine's sister, Emma, was married to Sever's nephew Sever K. Starkey.  I had not been aware, however, that Justine and Emma's brother, Peter, was married to Sever's niece, Clara Gilbertson, and their brother, Conrad, was married to Clara's sister, Josephine!  That adds up to four marriages between the descendants of Sevat Starkey and the children of Hans Peterson!

Here's how the Starkey's and Peterson's were interconnected through marriage:
1)  Sevat Knudson Stake and Karoline Syversdatter
     2)  Knute Starkey and Bertha Larson
          3)  Sever K. Starkey and Emma Peterson  (daughter of Hans)
     2)  Sever S Starkey and Justine Peterson  (daughter of Hans)
     2)  Christina Starkey and Andrew Gilbertson
          3)  Josephine Gilberston and Conrad H. Peterson  (son of Hans)
          3)  Clara Gilbertson and Peter Peterson  (son of Hans)

1)  E. Hans Peterson and Karoline ??
     2)  Justine Eline Peterson and Sever S Starkey  (son of Sevat)
     2)  Conrad H. Peterson and Josephine Gilbertson  (granddaughter of Sevat)
     2)  Peter Peterson and Clara Gilbertson  (granddaughter of Sevat)
     2)  Emma Peterson and Sever K Starkey  (grandson of Sevat)

Knud Endresen

The Digitalarkivet parish records for Akershus festning slaveri document the death of Knud Endresen of Stake on September 1, 1844 at age 63 years.  I'm having a little trouble deciphering some of the words on the record so I'm still unsure of the cause of death.  (My best guess is he died of a heart attack or pneumonia.)  If I'm unable to figure it out by Tuesday, I plan to take a copy of the page to class for some assistance.  In the meantime, I took another look at the Gol parish records for late 1844 and early 1845 and found a record for the marriage of widow Kirste Halvorsdatter of Stake, Gol and widower, Ailak Thoreson.  They were married in July of 1845, about 9 months after Knud's death.  According to my language instructor, it was not uncommon for widows or widowers to remarry quickly following the death of a spouse with the purpose of saving the family farm.  So, Kirste's marriage to Ailak may have had a more practical than romantic motivation.

Another curiosity derived from these records is the question of Kirste's age.  The marriage record for Ailak lists her age as 46 and Ailak's as 48 years.  If accurate, Kirste would have been born in 1799 and would have only been 13 years when Knud's son Halvor was born.  Though not impossible, she would have been a very young mother.  If Knud had a wife before Kirste, I may be able to find church records of her death or marriage records for Knud and Kirste's marriage.  If Kirste was not the mother of Knud's first children, including his oldest, Halvor, I'm suspicious that Knud may have been married to an older sister of Kirste's  (another Halvorsdatter) prior to his marriage to Kirste.  Of course, locating Kirste's christening record would be useful in determining if she was indeed born circa 1799.  Unfortunately, it may be a while before I am able to find those records since they are not available in the Digitalarkivet at this time.

All of this is speculation and the facts may be quite different.  Whatever the truth, there are enough interesting questions to keep me busy for quite a while.

Akershus Festning

I discovered a Norwegian family tree that references Sevat Knutson of Stake, Gol, Norway. It doesn’t provide source information and I believe it may include some inaccuracies, but it does introduce some new place names and additional generations to our lineage. Especially interesting to me is a reference to Akershus Festning (Oslo Fortress) as the place of death of Sevat’s father. If, indeed, Knud Endreson died in Akershus Fortress in 1844, he may have been a prisoner.  In addition to common criminals, many socialists were imprisoned in Akershus Festning around the time of Knud's death.  So, determining how he came to be at Akershus may prove very interesting.

Knud's death may also provide a clue to the emigration of his sons.  If he was a common criminal, they may have left to escape the stigma of his circumstances.  If he was a political prisoner, they may have left for the promise of a better political climate in America.  Certainly, if he spent time in Akershus, his family would have suffered consequences and his sons' departures so soon after his death were likely among them.  Any information I can find on prisoners of Akershus festning slaveri, on the political climate of the Hallingdal region before the Knudson's left for America, and on Knud Endreson, in particular, will help in understanding the motivation behind his sons' immigration to America.

More puzzle pieces to examine ...

Min tipp oldefar

In last night's class, our Norwegian instructor gave us a handy vocabulary sheet.  It's entitled "Familiemedlemmer paa norsk" which translates to "family members in Norwegian".  So now I know the words for mother, father, grandparent, great grandparent, etc.  I was interested to discover that Norwegians use the word 'tipp' where we use the word 'great' to add a generation to a grandparent.  However, Norwegians do not use this generation-adder for great grandparents, only for great great grandparents and beyond.  The term for great grandparent/father/mother is olde-foeldre/far/mor.  The term for great great grandfather is tipp oldefar.  For great great great grandfather it's tipp tipp oldefar.  And so on.

As a learning exercise, we were asked to generate a family tree and add a description of the relationship of each individual to ourselves.  Since I already have a fairly extensive family tree developed, the challenge was to limit this tree to something manageable.  I chose to reduce it to my known Norwegian line plus a few generations of the remainder of my family.  Since I've learned only a few verbs and am not sure of the rules for conjugation in Norwegian, my descriptions below are limited, but here's a stab at describing some of my family.

Sevat Starkey's South Dakota Homestead

The land record that revealed the story behind the name change from Sevat Knudson to Sevart K. Stake was located using the Bureau of Land Management's online land patent search at http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/.  Records found on the website include a legal land description, the date of issue of the patent as well as the size of the parcel and by what authority the land was acquired (homestead act, etc.)  Most important, records include an accession/serial number and Bureau of Land Management serial number.  These numbers can be used to order copies of original land documents.  These documents may contain gems of information such as were found in Sevart K. Stake's homestead documents.  Even when records only contain information about the land acquisition, they may provide a glimpse at the personality of the ancestor through his questionaire responses.  In some cases, an image of the land patent is viewable on the website, but this image will not include all file documents.  It is always preferable to obtain the entire file, if possible.

A number of Starkey famiily land records can be found using this search tool.  Here are some of them:

Snakker de norsk?

Velkommen!

My recent discovery of Norwegian records online has made the ability to read Norwegian more appealing than ever.  So, I have enrolled in a beginner's class offered through the local Scandinavian Language Institute.  I don't expect to become conversant in the language, but do want to learn enough grammar and vocabulary to be able to make sense of Norwegian websites and historical documents.  The latter may be a bit optimistic since written documents of the 19th century have been difficult enough to read in English,  let alone a foreign language.  But, familiarity with even some of the language will be a help.  In addition to the language instruction, the class gives me an opportunity to learn more about the culture of Norway -- both past and present.  All of this helps in piecing together the puzzle of my ancestors' lives 1 1/2 centuries ago.

Before I started the class, I was unaware there are two written Norwegian languages:  Nynorsk and Bokmaal++.  Bokmaal is a modifed version of Danish (the standard written language in the 16th - 19th centuries) while Nynorsk is based on Norwegian dialects.  All Norwegian students are taught both languages, but usage of Nynorsk is only about 15 % while Bokmaal is written by about 85% of Norwegians.  Spoken Norwegian is another matter.  Regional differences in oral dialects abound in Norway.  These variations on the language make good dictionaries a necessity in sorting out the differences.  I was fortunate to stumble onto an 1892 Dano-Norwegian/English dictionary in a used bookstore a few years ago.  Although it was published about a half century after some of my ancestors left Norway, it is useful in translating their language.  For my class, I am acquiring a modern dictionary that includes both Bokmaal and Nynorsk.  Between the two dictionaries, I hope eventually to be able to translate much of the material I encounter in my research.

As I develop my language skills and sift through the research materials I've begun to collect, my blogging is slowing down.  It's likely to be a while before I have researched the current documents on my ancestors' lives in Norway and new discoveries will be few and far between.  To provide something of possible interest in the meantime, I've added a link to photos of family tombstones.  These photos include Norwegian and non-Norwegian ancestors and are located on my SmugMug site.  (Though copyright protected, my images may be legally downloaded for personal use.  In addition, printed copies may be ordered via SmugMug.  The cost is for the lab that does the printing and for shipping.  I do not receive payment for these prints.)

Tak for i dag!

++  I don't yet have the Norwegian character set available for my blog, so am making common substitutions for the 'extra' Norwegian characters.  (aa == a with a circle over it; ae == combined ae character, etc.)

Where have I been?

One of the constants of this hobby has been the ebb and flow of research.  Since it is a hobby and not a vocation, I'm often stealing time from other pursuits in order to delve into historical records and written accounts.  While I have more free time than I did when my sons were young, I find the amount of research that I would like to do rarely matches the amount of time I can reasonably spare.  So, it's an on-going tug of war between research and other pursuits.  Such was the case in the past few weeks.  The tug of both expected and unexpected demands won out over research.  Whatever exciting discoveries await in the Digitalarkivet, they will remain unread for a while longer.  In the meantime, I thought I'd post a descendant chart for ggg-grandfather, Knud Endreson of Stake, Gol, Buskerud, Norweg.

In an effort to preserve privacy, I've entered living persons and persons who may be living as "Private".  In consideration of space, I have not included my sources, but will provide that information to interested parties on request.  I have only posted information that I believe to be true but, upon further research, some may prove to contain inaccuracies.  So, if you wish to use this information, it would be well to check my sources.  With those provisos understood, let me introduce you to Knud Endreson's descendants:

Time Travel

There is a movie currently playing in theaters called "The Time Traveler's Wife" based upon a novel by Audrey Niffenegger.  I thoroughly enjoyed the book when I read it a few years agoI'm not a big sci-fi fan, but I am intrigued by the concept of time travel -- especially the practical and ethical aspects of it.  Niffenegger's book explores those concepts while telling a romantic tale.  (1)

If you're wondering what this has to do with my Nordic ancestors -- not much.  But it does have something to do with my passion for genealogical research.  I find researching family histories involves a sort of time travel -- not the sci-fi sort, but a mental exercise.  One of the highlights of research is being able to transcend time and bring an ancestor to life in my imagination.  By emersing myself in details of his life, time and place, my image of him gains animation.  As I imagine him living his life, I am briefly transported to his world.

The portal for this type of time travel is research.  Before stepping into my ancestral world, I  develop a dossier of sorts.  In addition to whatever personal information I have about him, I add information about the social, commercial, religious, political, geographic or climatic characteristics of his place in history.  I may not use all the information I gather, but having a well developed foundation allows me to add depth and color to his known characteristics.

I recently decided to focus my attention on the world of my gg-grandparents, Sevat and Kari Starkey.  Since they were born in Norway around 1820,  part of my research has to cover early to mid 19th century Norwegians.   This is my first time to delve into Norwegian research, so my initial task was to develop a list of sources.  I decided to begin with a couple of Norwegian-American genealogy websites and drill down through their references, capturing promising ones as I progressed.  This can be a time consuming process and is not as exciting as looking at data specific to my subject, but it is key to a successful search.  Investing the time in developing sources and a research plan generally saves time later by making it easier to recognize mismatches and inconsistencies.  Still, it requires some discipline to invest in this step before getting to the fun stuff.

Not long into my pursuit of Norwegian research materials, I discovered two searchable databases previously unknown to me which I expect will be of great value as I go forward.  Although I knew it was premature to start an efficient search of these databases, my curiosity got the better of me and I  threw discipline aside and decided to take a peek.  I entered Sevat's byname (Stake), the supposed name of the farm where he was born, and searched a database of Norwegian farms.  To my surprise and delight, it reported a match on one locale!  (2)

I was excited, but knew the match does not prove it is the farm of Sevat's youth.  Nonetheless, it's location added to my curiosity.  It is located in Buskerud County near Gol.  This area was familiar to me from previous reading of local histories in Allamakee county, Iowa (where Kari and Sevat lived as their family matured).  These histories and a few mini-biographies told of a group of families coming from Gol, Norway to America, settling first in Rock County, Wisconsin, and soon moving to Allamakee County, Iowa.  Their migration together was not accidental, but coordinated by members of the group.  These people were neighbors (and possibly family) of Sevat and Kari and of others who at one time or other  adopted Stake or Stakke as a surname.  Though it is not conclusive evidence, it does improve the probability that Sevat and Kari came from the area.  (3)

Armed with this information, I turned to the other database and searched church records for the area near Gol.  I found three records that document significant events in Kari and Sevat's lives.  One is their marriage record from June of 1846; one their daughter's birth in April of 1847; and the last, their departure from the church (for emigration to America) in May of 1847.  I need to do a lot more research before I say with a high degree of confidence that the Sevat Knudson of Stake and Kari Syverson of Hesla, whose marriage is recorded on line 18, page 374 of the 1837-1863 Gol ministerialbok, are my gg-grandparents.  In the meantime, I am excited at the discovery and look forward to learning more about that area of Norway.  (4)

Gol, part of the Hallingdal district of Buskerud fylke (county), is located about 200 kilometers northwest of Oslo and about 300 kilometers east of Bergen.  It lies where the Hemsil and Hallingdal rivers merge, on the northeast side of the two rivers.  Stake farm, where Sevat Knudson was born,  is located about 6 kilometers northeast of Gol along a road leading to a modern day ski resort.  Hesla farm, where Kari lived when she married Sevat and where their daughter, Kirjste was born, is located a few kilometers from Gol, on the west side of the Hemsil.    Though a highland area, Gol is flanked by higher mountains, especially to the north and west.  Ancient migration routes to western Norway traveled through the valley bringing traders who populated the area.  Iron from the local marshland provided a resource for trade and, with poor soil in the area, even farmers turned to trade to supplement their livelihood.  Cattle raised in the valley were driven to markets in Vesterlandet.   (5)

Perhaps this trading heritage made the local people good candidates for the adventure of going to America.  It may partially explain why so many from Gol emigrated to Wisconsin and Iowa.  At this point, I'm  not sure.  I have much more research to do to understand the history, geography, climate and customs of the Hallingdal.  But once I've gathered the information and compiled a more complete list of family members, I'll be ready to time travel -- destination 1840's Hallingdal valley Norway!
